Former New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu Says He Is Considering 2028 Presidential Run
NEW ORLEANS (BAMM Network) — Former New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu, who later served as a senior adviser in President Joe Biden’s administration, says he is considering a run for president in 2028.
Landrieu, 66, told Politico that encouragement from others and concern about the direction of the country have pushed him to seriously weigh a bid for the Democratic nomination.
“I am thinking about it,” Landrieu said. “A lot of the people have said, ‘You should think about it,’ so it’s hard not to. It’s an honor for people to even think that, you know, that would even be possible.”
Landrieu said he has not identified the people urging him to run, but told Politico that the country’s current political climate is weighing heavily on him.
“The country’s in trouble,” he said. “The country needs a lot of help.”
Landrieu said he would only enter the race if he believed he had a legitimate path to victory and could help bring the country together.
“I would not run as a vanity project,” he said. “I would not run to hope that somebody picked me to be in the Cabinet.”
He indicated that a decision could come sometime between the November 2026 midterm elections and the beginning of 2027.
Landrieu served as mayor of New Orleans from 2010 to 2018 and previously served as Louisiana’s lieutenant governor. During the Biden administration, he spent more than two years as a senior adviser overseeing implementation of the bipartisan infrastructure law. After Biden ended his 2024 reelection campaign, Landrieu became a national co-chair of Kamala Harris’ presidential campaign and also served as a co-chair of the 2024 Democratic National Convention.
A Landrieu candidacy would add a former Southern mayor with executive and White House experience to what is expected to become a crowded Democratic field in 2028.
For now, however, Landrieu remains a potential candidate. He has not announced a campaign.
