ATLANTA (BAMM Network) — Atlanta police arrested an Argentina supporter during a pre-match rally ahead of Wednesday's FIFA World Cup semifinal between Argentina and England, following an incident that drew widespread attention on social media and underscored heightened security surrounding one of the tournament's highest-profile matches.
Videos circulating online showed officers taking a fan into custody during a flag-waving gathering, known among Argentine supporters as a banderazo, held Tuesday at Underground Atlanta. Authorities have not publicly identified the individual or announced any formal charges stemming from the arrest.
Social media users have claimed the fan directed racial slurs at an Atlanta police officer before the arrest. However, Atlanta police have not confirmed those allegations, and no official incident report released as of publication attributes the arrest to racist or discriminatory language.
The arrest came amid increased security measures for the Argentina-England semifinal, a match considered one of the highest-risk fixtures of the 2026 FIFA World Cup because of the longstanding rivalry between the two nations. The semifinal ultimately drew tens of thousands of supporters to Atlanta, where Argentina defeated England 2-1 to advance to the FIFA World Cup Final against Spain.
