Louisiana Rapper NBA YoungBoy Says He’s Living in South Korea and Will ‘Never’ Move Back to the U.S.

SEOUL, South Korea — Louisiana-born rapper YoungBoy Never Broke Again says he has relocated to South Korea and has no intention of moving back to the United States, revealing the major life change during a rare interview with comedian Funny Marco.

The Baton Rouge native, whose real name is Kentrell Gaulden, discussed his new home during an episode of Marco’s “Open Thoughts” released Tuesday. The interview itself was filmed in South Korea, where YoungBoy said he is now living.

“It’s very safe here and clean,” YoungBoy said when discussing the country. He also described South Korea as being “out the way.”

When Marco asked whether he would ever consider moving back to the United States, YoungBoy’s answer was emphatic.

“Never in life. Never,” he said. “There’s nothing there for me, nothing else there for me at all.”

YoungBoy did not rule out ever visiting the United States again, however. He indicated he could potentially return as a tourist — making his comments specifically about living in the country again, rather than a pledge never to return under any circumstances.

The move marks another major chapter for the 26-year-old rapper, whose career has remained closely connected to Louisiana even as his fame grew internationally.

Born and raised in Baton Rouge, YoungBoy emerged from the city’s rap scene before becoming one of his generation’s most commercially successful hip-hop artists. Earlier this year, he told Complex that if he ever performed again in his hometown, he would want the concert held at LSU’s Tiger Stadium.

YoungBoy has spent the past several months traveling internationally with his family, including stops in China, Norway, Belgium and France before settling in South Korea, according to XXL.

His comments about leaving the United States came during a wide-ranging interview in which YoungBoy also suggested his music career could be approaching its final chapter.

Asked how many albums he believes he has left,

YoungBoy responded, “One or two.” He also said he expects to embark on only one more tour.

“One for sure,” he said. “I’ll go on tour one more time throughout my whole life and that’s it.”

The rapper also revealed that a doctor told him the left side of his heart was swollen, a health issue he said he dealt with while continuing to perform during his MASA Tour.

Despite his declaration that he does not intend to live in America again, YoungBoy’s connection to Louisiana remains significant. His “American YoungBoy” documentary received theatrical screenings across the state earlier this year, including in Baton Rouge, New Orleans-area theaters, Lake Charles and Shreveport.

For one of Baton Rouge’s most internationally recognizable artists, however, home — at least for now — is more than 7,000 miles away in South Korea.
