Houston ICE Shooting Investigation: FBI Warrant Alleges Suspected Methamphetamine Found in Victim’s Work Van

HOUSTON (BAMM Network) — Newly unsealed FBI search warrant documents allege investigators found what appeared to be methamphetamine inside the work van of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo following the fatal ICE shooting that has sparked weeks of protests and calls for greater transparency in Houston.
According to an FBI search warrant affidavit filed in federal court, agents conducting an exterior inspection of Salgado Araujo’s white Ford Transit work van observed several plastic bags containing a “white crystal-like substance” that investigators wrote appeared “consistent with methamphetamine” based on their training and experience. The affidavit states the suspected substance was visible in multiple locations inside the vehicle, including on the dashboard and passenger-side floorboard.
The warrant authorized investigators to search the van for evidence of potential federal drug offenses. However, the affidavit does not indicate that the substance has been laboratory tested or confirmed to be methamphetamine, and no drug charges have been filed against Salgado Araujo.
The disclosure comes as federal and state authorities continue investigating the circumstances surrounding Salgado Araujo’s death during an immigration enforcement operation earlier this month.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has previously said agents attempted to stop the van while conducting an enforcement operation and that an agent opened fire after the vehicle allegedly posed a threat. Attorneys representing Salgado Araujo’s family, along with community advocates, have disputed portions of the government’s account and continue to call for greater transparency regarding the shooting.
The release of the search warrant has also prompted questions from elected officials.
State Sen. Carol Alvarado, D-Houston, said the community remains “heartbroken” and is seeking answers not only about the shooting itself but also about the timing and circumstances surrounding the warrant. She questioned why details from the investigation were becoming public while many aspects of the shooting remain unresolved.
Meanwhile, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott confirmed this week that the Texas Rangers have joined the investigation into the fatal shooting.
“Any loss of life is tragic,” Abbott said. “Everyone in Texas wants to ensure there’s no loss of life… the Texas Rangers are now going to be involved in an investigation of this matter, working alongside federal officials to get to the bottom of exactly what happened.”
The fatal shooting has fueled protests throughout Houston, where demonstrators have called for an independent investigation and greater accountability from federal immigration authorities. Community members have also addressed Houston City Council, urging local leaders to seek additional answers regarding the incident.
Federal investigators have not announced whether the suspected substance found in the van played any role in the events leading up to the shooting. The FBI’s affidavit focuses solely on establishing probable cause to search the vehicle and does not draw conclusions about the use, ownership or origin of the material observed inside.
The FBI, ICE and the Texas Rangers continue to investigate the shooting. No final determination has been released regarding whether the use of deadly force was justified.
